Samson Mnisi was born in Lesotho in 1971 and studied Fine Art at FUBA Academy. He is currently based in Soweto, South Africa.
Samson’s last name Mnisi translates to “Rainmaker” and comes from a long lineage of Sangoma healers. His artwork reflects the tradition of the Sangoma by using ritual and tribal markings and ancient empowerment symbols. The use of ancient Zulu symbols and Sangoma spiritual marks connect the past and present.
This monoprint is a viscosity print with Samson scribing each layer of ink with his ritual Sangoma and Zulu symbols. Master Printer, Tracy Mayrello, embarked on a two week collaboration - which turned into two months - creating a series of 10 oversized mono prints. Each artwork reveals his interpretation of an old language.
“The purpose of art making in that historical context reflected the religion, culture and philosophy of that time. I therefore believe that by honestly looking at our history in totality: pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial times we can truly understand where we are and how we should relate to the world and the future.” Samson Mnisi (Mashumi Art Projects 2014)
